About Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone and Shanghai Pudong New Area
The Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, introduced by the Chinese Central government in 2013 as a key testing ground for comprehensive deepening reforms, represents a significant shift in China’s economic development and a huge step towards liberalising the financial system. The PFTZ is extended across 120 km2 in Shanghai this year and is primed to attract overseas investors, particularly those from the financial services sector. The PFTZ is spearheaded by Shanghai’s Pudong government, which this year celebrates its 25th anniversary — a milestone for a district that was a farming village before 1990. Today, Pudong is the financial heart of Shanghai, a destination for Hollywood filming locations, and a modern 21st century hotbed for the artistic world. The PFTZ will further broaden Pudong’s openness, improving its business environment and promoting continued innovation.
