RuM 2 vs 5 Baltic Exchange – 20 September 2014
On Saturday 20 September the Baltic Exchange took on the Reeder & Makler Club, Hamburg, (German owners & brokers) at SC Union 03 stadium in Hamburg. A blurry eyed Baltic Exchange team managed to finally make up for England’s poor recent international record with an emphatic 5-2 victory over their German counterparts.
The Baltic Exchange started well, going 1-0 up after a couple of minutes thanks to an Ali Donald (IVS) goal, after some fine work by Colin Jenkins (Sevenseas) and Andrea Bolgona (Howe Rob). The RuM club were shell shocked and could have easily been 3-0 down after 20 minutes. Nevertheless the Baltic continued their normal physical game, pressing high, and were rewarded when Henry Potter (Hartland) was brought down 25 yards from the RuM goal. Nick Marns (Thurlestone) stepped up and curled a beauty of a free kick in to the top corner to send the Baltic 2-0 up.
During the second half the Baltic stepped-off the gas as RuM piled on the pressure which was later rewarded by a deflected goal from a corner. Luckily their come-back didn’t last long as within three minutes the Baltic scored from a set piece of their own. A well worked move saw Tom Buckley (GFI) flick on a Nick Marns corner to Baltic centre-back Matt Lewis (EDF Trading) who scored a header under pressure from the RuM defenders. 3-1 to the BEFC. The Baltic Exchange continued to dominate play, creating a series of chances as RuM became deflated. A run by Andrea saw him being brought down for a penalty, which Nick swiftly converted to a goal. A late push by the German team saw them score after a close goal-line scramble, but this was only a consolatory effort as five minutes from time Angus Barge (CW Kellock) scored with a great solo effort to see the Baltic claim a 5-2 victory.
Man of the match as voted by the players was Andrea Bologna – an outstanding performance by the Baltic’s Italian import!
It was a fantastic weekend and a great time was had by both sets of players. New relationships were formed and old ones strengthened, which is what the weekend is really about. We thank RuM club President Angelika Nieder, Johannes Pfeiffer of the German young brokers association and all representatives for their warm hospitality. We look forward to hosting the RuM club in the near future and starting a long lasting tradition.
