Ben Pussey and Petter Arrentz beat Clarksons 1 in final
Almost perfect weather for tennis highlighted this year’s tournament held at the Surbiton Racket & Fitness Club on Thursday 10 July. Despite a disappointing entry, the usual format of the main tournament and the American Plate for those knocked out in the early rounds ensured that all competitors were able to play both before and after the superb Club buffet lunch.
Entering for the first time, the pairing of Ben Pusey a former winner under a different banner and Petter Arrentz, a Norwegian Youth No One of yesteryear and representing R S Platou were worthy winners, overcoming Clarksons 1 represented by Stephen McHale and Allan Kent Lemon. Third placed Embiricos Shipbrokers (Nick and George Embiricos) beat Baltic Secretariat (Crispin Ecclestone & James Pendred).
The Clarkson 2 pairing of Gauvain Lafaye and Alex Whyte came top in the American with 23 out of 28 points whilst the Nomikos 1 pairing of Mark Jackson and Alex Wood came in second with 21 points.
After tea, referee Perry Perera and his deputy Costas Maramenedes challenged the Cup winners Ben Pusey and Petter Arrentz to a one set exhibition game which resulted in a hard fought and entertaining win 6/4 by the Cup winners.
Before presenting the prizes to the worthy winners, Richard Fehr, grandson of the Cup’s presenter, Frank Fehr CBE, on behalf of all present thanked the Club for their usual excellent hospitality and great condition of the grass courts. Introducing a personal note, Richard Fehr reported that he had received an email from sister Amanda, now living in the USA who wished all those present a pleasant and rain-free day.
Fehr thanked referee Perry Perera for all the hard work he put into organising the day and also Costas Maramenedes, American tourney Supremo and umpire of the final.
Sharp-eyed observers will have noted that the tournament has historically been held on the Thursday after Wimbledon. As Wimbledon has been put back a week in 2015, a date in mid June for our Tournament is being considered. Confirmation of the date will be announced in due course.
