The sun shone and the setting was positively Mediterranean as ten teams assembled for BESA’s annual weekend of inter-company racing. Saturday saw barely enough wind to move the boats through a ripping spring tide, but all four races were finished and VesselsValue.com were the overnight leaders in the field. 68 diners enjoyed the excellent food provided by Sea View Yacht Club’s re-vamped catering department, and as traditional, some serious eating and drinking took place.
We welcomed four new companies to the event: VesselsValue.com, ACM, Gray Page & Birketts. A sad absence was EA Gibsons, as their star sailor and BESA Commodore Rupert Scott-Hughes had to attend a ship closing in Asia.
Despite some clear cases of over-refreshment, all ten teams came to the start line on Sunday morning to find that a little more breeze had arrived and under azure skies we enjoyed two fantastic races under the most perfect conditions one could expect in England.
The final results saw AM Nomikos winning overall with nine points, VesselsValue second with 12 and a fast improving Gray Page & Birketts completing the podium with 13. Also competing, some in the broadest sense of the word, were Howe Robinson, Baltic Exchange, Francis&Friends, Brown Jenkinson and a Young Baltic Association team ably put together by Jamie Dove.
A special thanks to Mark Jackson as vice-Commodore for standing in on the speeches, and to Mike Robson for co-ordinating the tombola. Mike’s skill in selecting the right people to sell the tickets is a rare gift, and the efforts of Felicity Burling and May Economakis produced a total of £400 for the RNLI.
