Ambiguous wording can be the downfall of a charterparty, but a recent case has proved that it need not be the death of the document. While this could be taken as proof that as long as the intention is clear, conflicting clauses can be overcome, brokers would be well advised to ensure that the correct phraseology is used at all times.
Nominations from Catharine Bacon of Cargill PLC (Charterer) and William Robson of Brown Jenkinson (Shipbroker) have been received for the post of Baltic Ballot Director. Since there are two nominations to fill one vacancy on the Board there will be an election. Voting papers will be circulated on Monday 3 March 2014.
Charterers can be caught off guard by unsafe port claims if there is not an acute awareness of the charterparty terms on safe ports and safe places. However, there are limits to liabilities that can benefit charterers that find themselves in owners’ crosshairs.

The failure to pass on operational messages can have a wide variety of consequences for brokers and their principals. However, brokers can mitigate some of those consequences by proactive use of terms and conditions giving specific contact information for time sensitive information and requiring principals to confirm receipt of the same.
